What comes back
A new copy of your PDF, and a short answer in colours: ✓ green was done automatically, ! amber is for a person to check before publishing, ✕ red is a problem, and – grey was not needed. Your original is never changed.
A PDF longer than 5 pages is cut to its first 5, and only those are fixed. The answer says when that happened, and what of the original the shorter copy leaves out. A free account fixes the whole document.
Four kinds of PDF, and what happens to each
A scanned notice
To a screen reader, a scan is a blank page. GovAccess reads the words on it and puts them under the picture, so the page can be read aloud and searched. Where the copy is given a structure tree, it also looks for pictures on the page outside those words — a seal, a photograph — and keeps each one it finds as a picture of its own, with no description here.
! Check: the recognised words, especially names and numbers, and any picture it did not find.
A fillable form
Boxes a screen reader announces as “Text1, Text2” get the words printed beside them, such as “First name”. Nothing is made up: a box with no words near it is left alone and counted.
! Check: each name it gave.
A long report
Where the document and the service allow it, headings, lists and tables are marked so a screen reader can jump between them, and GovAccess checks the order the page will be read in and points to any spot that jumps around. Where the document rules it out, the result says why.
! Check: headings, and tables whose headers span several columns.
A locked PDF
If whoever published it locked it against changes, GovAccess leaves the lock in place and tells you. Ask them for an unlocked copy and try again.
✕ No copy is made, and it says why.
These describe what usually happens. What your document gets is on the screen above once you choose it.
What this is not
It is not a compliance check and not a certification. The copy is easier to read; a person still decides whether each heading is right, whether the order makes sense and what each picture shows. No automated tool can decide whether your organization meets the ADA, including this one.
Questions about AI and your data?
Does the free page use AI?
It calls no AI model. Where your PDF has no text, text recognition reads the words on our own servers, and sends your file nowhere. Pictures it finds are left without a description and counted on the result.
Does the free PDF page keep our file?
Your file is never saved. The fixed copy waits in our server's memory for up to fifteen minutes until you download it, and is gone once you do. The free page calls no AI model; where your PDF has no text, text recognition reads it on our own servers.
If you give us your email address to download the copy, that address is kept as a contact, and we email you at most once to ask how it went. Our privacy page says how long it is kept and how to have it removed.
The free page is one of our public pages, so the advertising and visitor-measurement tags our privacy page lists run on it. The panel that shows your file's name and results is hidden from the session recording.
Can we say no to AI?
Yes. Anyone signed in to your organization's account can turn AI off for the whole organization on the Account page, or ask us and we will do it. You can also choose "Don't use AI on these files" when you send one set of files, and leave AI on for everything else.
With AI off, nothing from your documents or your website is sent to any AI company, and no AI model writes descriptions or other words of its own into your files.
